Amaefule’s Header Sinks Rangers In Plateau
Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) defending champions, Plateau United regained the summit of the standings following a lone goal victory over Rangers in a rescheduled fixture played at the New Stadium in Jos on Wednesday.
Defender Chizoba Amaefule, the new import from Abia Warriors scored his first goal for the club in a rare manner to give the home side the needed points.
Coming from the away win against a Cameroonian side in the preliminary round of the CAF Champions League, Plateau United dictated the pace from the blast of referee Marcus Bwashi’s whistle, pinning the Flying Antelopes to their half for a better part of the game but could not put the ball beyond Femi Thomas.
The Rangers shot-stopper guarded the sticks with brilliant saves especially in the second half denying Tosin Omoyele and Sunday Ingbede from scoring.
Rangers strategy of soaking the pressure with occasional counterattacks caught Okiemute Odah unaware in the 65th minute but he stretched to parry Bright Silas’ brilliant attempt to safety.
The match decider came from the incessant raids by the Plateau team in one of the forays from Omoyele’s solo run which resulted in a free kick.
Raphael Ayagwa’s located Ingbede who provided the lob which found the waiting head of Amaefule to beat Thomas to the far right for the lone goal that took the champions to the top of the table.
